In 1978, a baby squirrel was rescued by Chuck and Lou Ann Best after being blown from her nest during a hurricane in Sanford, Florida. The squirrel quickly adapted to her new home, becoming a beloved family member. She loved nestling in Lou Ann’s shirt for warmth, traveling with the family, and even joining them on camping and water-skiing trips. One day, Chuck joked about teaching the squirrel to water-ski, and soon, they turned that joke into reality.
Twiggy, as she was later named, quickly gained fame. The Sanford Herald published the first story about her in 1979, followed by other media outlets. She made appearances on national TV, including "Good Morning America," and soon became a sensation. Chuck and Lou Ann trained other animals to ski as well, but Twiggy remained the star. After Chuck’s tragic death in 1997, Lou Ann continued Twiggy’s legacy, training another squirrel and keeping the business alive. Twiggy’s story remains a testament to the unexpected joys life can bring.
